Run Down with a Cold? Use These Tips
Winter is a time for sneezing and sniffles. Having a cold or the flu is never ideal, and these germs spread quickly during winter, infecting even the strongest of us. If you’re one of the not-so-lucky people who has come down with the winter woes, check out these home remedies to speed up your recovery.
Hot ginger tea – While you should be sipping on water or tea more often when you’re ill, hot ginger tea is one of the best that you can pick up. The gingerol in the ginger helps to relieve congestion, reduces inflammation, and hydrates you when you need it most.
Garlic – Garlic is a natural antibiotic, antifungal, and antibacterial. To reap all of garlic’s benefits, mince 1-2 cloves into a small glass of water. Chug it and do this once a day until you feel better.
Cinnamon – It’s an effective antiviral and antibiotic. Mix one tablespoon in hot water to make a spicy (and helpful!) tea.
Ditch dairy – Remove dairy products from your diet as they can cause inflammation and increase congestion. This food suppresses immune function and slows the body’s healing ability.
Face Steam – Boil 1-2 cups of water in a large pot. Remove from the heat and add a couple of drops of either tea tree oil or eucalyptus oil. Cover the pan for 5 minutes, and then put your face directly over the pot with a towel covering your head to hold in the heat. Breathe in the steam for 10 minutes, which will loosen congestion and kill viruses and bacteria in the lungs and sinuses.
Eat raw – Avoid starchy foods, sugars, and white foods. Aim to increase your intake of raw fruits and vegetables instead!
Rest up – Take time to sleep, rest, and recover. This will ultimately help your body to heal.
