Celebrate National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Learn how you can get involved this National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  This month, learn more about this disease and find out how you can support the fight against breast cancer.
What is Breast Cancer?
Cancer occurs when malignant (cancerous) cells start to grow uncontrollably in the body.  Normally, cells do their assigned jobs and replicate themselves at a steady pace.  However, cancerous cells grow and replicate at unmanageable rates forming masses in the body known as tumors.  When these malignant cells form in the tissues of the breast, this is known as breast cancer.
Goals of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
In addition to spreading awareness, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month encourages the public to take care of their breast health.  One of the main goals of this campaign is to promote early detection methods such as breast self-exams and mammograms.  During a breast self-exam, you should feel for any lumps and note any abnormalities in your breasts.  If you notice any issues, you should contact your physician with your concerns.  Mammograms are a screening method that uses x-rays to locate any abnormal masses in the breast tissue.  As one of the most effective early detection methods, mammograms are considered one of the best tools in the fight against breast cancer.  You should get a mammogram every year, so one way to honor National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to schedule your annual mammogram today.
Get Involved
There are many ways you can get involved this October.  For instance, you can donate to legitimate breast cancer research initiatives and support organizations that provide assistance to those diagnosed with breast cancer.  Additionally, you can participate in the many fundraisers and other events held throughout the month.  Finally, the easiest way to show your support is to wear the signature pink breast cancer ribbon.
This National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, encourage your friends and family to get involved and together we can end breast cancer!
